Summary0015734: vtkMapper::InterpolateScalarsBeforeMapping and off-screen rendering
DescriptionOff-screen rendering using scalar interpolation before mapping uses more colors than requested by vtkLookupTable::SetNumberOfTableValues.

I installed VTK6.3.0 using the standalone installer. The included script will produce an on-screen image that has the expected number of colors, and a png file that has more colors. The number of extra colors depends on the number of table values specified. Switching off InterpolateScalarsBeforeMapping will give the proper number of colors in the png file.

The image shows the on-screen image with the correct nr. of colors (4) and the off-screen image with 2 more colors.

I ran the script using a debugger and found the root cause for difference between on-screen and off-screen colors.

The on-screen rendering the vtkOpenGLTexture::Load does not require resampling of the texture whereas the off-screen rendering does require resampling. The original 6 colors (4 + 2 out-of-range colors) are changed to 8 colors, hence we see 6 on the off-screen image.

With VTK6.2.0 we had a similar problem but only on our windows machines, with VTK6.3.0 we have the issue also on our linux machines running a vncserver.

Is this still an issue in VTK 7.0, with the OpenGL2 backend, in particular? No resampling should occur in the OpenGL2 backend, unless your texture is larger than what the graphics hardware supports.
